Disney Cancels Plans for 3D Little Mermaid

Walt Disney has cancelled plans for a 3D version of its 1989 animated hit The Little Mermaid after disappointing re-releases of Monsters, Inc. and Beauty and the Beast in the format.

The film was the last of four animated releases which Disney planned to convert after The Lion King generated domestic ticket sales of $94 million in 2011. Monsters, Inc., its most recent film converted to 3D, had domestic ticket sales of only $30.6 million, according to the site Box Office Mojo.

Disney began 3D conversion of the underwater animated film in November, animated studio chief John Lasseter said. Conversion of existing films to 3D are considered generally inexpensive and are viewed by Disney as generating publicity to boost DVD sales of older films.

Disney will release a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie on July 10, 2015, the studio said in an email announcing its revised release schedule.

The company also said it would release two of its Marvel big-budget films in 3D next year: Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy.

NARAL picks new leader, seeks younger supporters

Young abortion rights activists hold a vigil in support of Roe v. Wade (Brenden Hoffman/Getty Images)

NARAL Pro-Choice America announced Monday it has tapped longtime Democratic operative Ilyse Hogue to serve as its new president as the group seeks to appeal to a younger generation of abortion-rights supporters.

Hogue replaces outgoing president Nancy Keenan, who is leaving the post after eight years. Last May, Keenan announced she would step down from the group after the 2012 election in order to bring in someone who could appeal to younger voters. In an interview with the Washington Post, Keenan said the group had found an intensity gap among young women who weren?t around when abortion wasn?t legal. She said the group needed to recruit a new generation of pro-choice activists for different roles?including her own.

The move comes amid what the group has described as increasing attacks on women?s rights around the country. According to a NARAL report released earlier this month, 42 anti-choice measures were passed in 25 states last year. The finding came as preparations are made to mark the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down state laws restricting abortion.

Hogue previously was director of political advocacy at MoveOn.org and also served as a senior adviser to Media Matters for America. During the 2012 campaign, she headed up the Friends of Democracy SuperPAC, a group that pushed for campaign finance reform, and was a columnist for the liberal magazine The Nation.

In a statement, Hogue said she was ?absolutely thrilled? to be joining NARAL.

?This is a critical moment to engage a new generation of young people in the conversation about what choice means in a modern age,? Hogue said. ?We have a unique opportunity to ignite the pro-choice values most Americans share, solidify our longstanding pro-choice base, and expand its reach moving forward.?

Legal needs grow with demand for North Coast wine ? North Bay ...

Securing enough North Coast grapes to supply growing consumer demand for wine is spurring growth in staffing and services among some North Bay law firms that serve the industry, all of which is helping the legal industry rebound after several years of static business.

Clockwise from left: Nick Donovan, Wendy Whitson, Katherine Philippakis, Scott Gerien

Fine-wine sales took a significant hit following the economic crash of 2008, and two difficult North Coast winegrape harvests added further uncertainty about supply. But as the economic recession recedes and after what?s thought to be a banner harvest in 2012, a few visible trends are emerging and creating demand among law firms: a spike in mergers-and-acquisitions activity and an anticipated grape shortage that has wineries looking to secure their own supplies.

?A lot of it has to do with the fact that there?s a grape shortage, so what a lot of producers are doing is trying to lock up their grape supplies,? said Nick Donovan, a partner at Napa-based Gaw Van Male. The firm added six attorneys over the last six months across multiple practice areas in response to the demand, Mr. Donovan said. The wine practice has grown by about 40 percent over the year. The firm plans to hire two more attorneys directly out of law school in 2013, Mr. Donavan said, both in the wine practice.

With the grape shortage come acquisitions of either land or other wineries, and with the acquisitions comes a need for legal counsel in a number of areas, ranging from grape contracts, real estate holdings, succession and estate planning. Brand extension and trademark applications are also on the rise, attorneys said.

Another Napa law firm, Dickenson Peatman & Fogarty, has experienced similar growth, adding five attorneys over the last six months, with plans of possibly adding more in its Santa Rosa office in 2013. About 70 percent of the firm?s business is related to the wine industry, and the aforementioned trends are driving the growth, according to Scott Gerien, co-managing partner.

?At DP&F, some of the most significant business was probably driven by acquisitions of assets and property, as well as things like brand extension,? Mr. Gerien said. ?For instance, our representation of Accolade in its acquisition of some of the Ascentia assets was a major project, and this type of deal also shows off additional subsequent work, such as license transfers with (Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau) and (Alcohol Beverage Control), new employment agreements, land use work and trademark portfolio maintenance.?

Accolade Wines of Australia in June acquired?wine brands Geyser Peak and XYZ Zin in Sonoma County and Atlas Peak in Napa Valley from Healdsburg-based Ascentia Wine Estates.

Regarding brand extension, a good gauge is the number of trademark applications filed for alcohol beverage products with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Mr. Gerien said.?Last year, 7,534 applications were filed with the office, compared with?7,081 in 2011 and?6,011?in 2010.

?So you can see that as anecdotal evidence related to the continued introduction of new brands,? he said.

The trend is not isolated to wine-specific legal practices, either, according to Wendy Whitson, managing director of Santa Rosa-based Anderson Zeigler Disharoon Gallagher & Gray, a full-service firm with numerous practice areas.

Ms. Whitson, who specializes in real estate transactions, said the recent spate of acquisitions underscores the importance of the wine industry in Sonoma and Napa counties, given its ability to impact law, finance and many other industries.

?I certainly have seen some expansion of business on the real estate end of the surge in M&A activity,? she said, noting that the firm doesn?t usually handle M&A but does work with what those deals affect. ?There are a slew of real estate issues that flow from those kinds of deals.?

A key difference between now and waves of acquisitions in the past is that those seeking to purchase wine businesses are focused heavily on land and wineries, versus brands and strong revenue, both of which were the dominant factor pre-recession, according to Katherine Philippakis, partner and chair of Farella Braun + Martel?s wine industry practice in St. Helena.

?The ideal purchase pre-2008 was a brand with very few hard assets and good revenues, and now there?s a return to the concept that people want to buy hard assets,? she said. ?They want to buy dirt.?

That?s changed for a number of reasons, particularly because?Napa County?wineries seeking to expand face strict land-use restrictions and zoning. Coupled with the perceived shortage of grapes, the land itself is now considered the best acquisition.

?There hasn?t been (much planting) activity in Napa for about 10 years,? said Ms. Philippakis of vineyard development. ?If you can?t plant more, then the only way get more land is either through grape contracts or acquisitions.?

Such real estate transactions often have more complicated legal structures, depending on the deal.

?There?s typically more due diligence with the associated land and there can be tricky issues with zoning,? she said.

Increased activity in mergers and acquisitions returned a bit in 2011 and increased significantly in 2012, according to Mr. Donovan of Gaw Van Male.

?It has definitely affected the legal industry,? he said.

Another factor, according to Mr. Donovan, is that large banks are aggressively seeking qualified clients in the wine industry, perhaps hoping to cash in on the rebounding sales of wine. And with a strong harvest, that could generate further interest in acquisitions.

?There?s just been a general uptick in activity,? Mr. Donovan said. ?It?s been good on the legal side of things.?

PhatzRadio :: NBA Roundup: Heat beats Kings 128-99

LeBron James #6 of the Miami Heat talks with Dwyane Wade #3, Chris Bosh #1, Mario Chalmers #15 and Udonis Haslem #40 during a game against the Golden State Warriors at American Airlines Arena on December 12, 2012 in Miami, Florida.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? Mario Chalmers had career highs with 10 3-pointers and 34 points to lead the Miami Heat to a 128-99 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Saturday night.

LeBron James had 20 points, seven assists, five steals and a pair of blocks for the Heat, who had a season-high point total. Miami, which hadn?t topped 100 points in its previous four games, got a needed bounceback win after losing two straight and five of eight since Dec. 26.

Chris Bosh had 16 points, Mike Miller 12 and Dwyane Wade 11 for Miami, which shot 56 percent from the field and went 17 for 37 from beyond the arc. Chalmers tied Brian Shaw?s franchise record for 3s and connected on 10-of-13 overall in breaking the previous record of nine 3s at Sleep Train Arena.

Isaiah Thomas made six 3-pointers and scored a career-high 34 points for the Kings, who dropped their fourth straight game.

MAGIC 104, CLIPPERS 101

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? J.J. Redick gave Orlando its first lead on a 3-pointer with 42 seconds left, Arron Afflalo tied his season high with 30 points, and the Magic snapped a 10-game skid.

The loss ended the Clippers? franchise-record 13-game, home-winning streak and provided them with a scare when All-Star guard Chris Paul went down holding his right knee with 54 seconds to go. Paul returned after a timeout and hit a 15-footer to draw his team within one with 33 seconds left.

But the Clippers turned the ball over on Jamal Crawford?s offensive foul. Josh McRoberts found Nikola Vucevic open under the basket, and Vucevic dunked to extend Orlando?s lead to 104-101 with 8 seconds left.

After a timeout, Crawford missed a 3-pointer as time expired.

Redick had 21 points for the injury-riddled Magic, who ended the franchise?s longest skid since 2003-04.

Blake Griffin tied his season high with 30 points for the Clippers.

WIZARDS 93, HAWKS 83

WASHINGTON (AP) ? John Wall gave his teammates a lift with 14 points and four assists in his first game of the season, and the worst-in-NBA Wizards have their first winning streak.

Wall?s playing time will be limited as he returns from a knee injury, but he appeared to have his old speed and explosiveness back while playing seven minutes in the first half and 15 in the second half.

No. 3 overall pick Bradley Beal, getting to play with Wall for the first time, scored 16 points for the Wizards, who are 6-28 but have strung together two wins in a row following their upset of Oklahoma City on Monday.

Jeff Teague scored 19 points, Al Horford had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Josh Smith added 11 points for the Hawks, who have lost five of six.

MAVERICKS 104, GRIZZLIES 83

DALLAS (AP) ? Shawn Marion scored a season-high 20 points, Dirk Nowitzki added 17 and the Mavericks won consecutive games for the first time in a month.

All five starters scored in double figures for Dallas, with Chris Kaman scoring eight straight points in the third quarter and finishing with 14. O.J. Mayo had 11 and Darren Collison 10.

The Grizzlies were ragged a night after a big overtime win against Southwest Division-leading San Antonio. Memphis shot 38 percent and Rudy Gay was the only starter in double figures. He led the Grizzlies with 12 points.

76ERS 107, ROCKETS 100

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Jrue Holiday scored 30 points, Thaddeus Young had 18 points and 12 rebounds and the 76ers snapped a five-game losing streak.

Jason Richardson scored 16 points for the Sixers, who finally return home for a lengthy stint as they try to play their way back into the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Sixers opened a stretch of 12 home games in the next 13 and hope they can start to offset a miserable 2-6 road trip that stretched over the new year.

James Harden led the Rockets with 29 points and Chandler Parsons had 23. Jeremy Lin missed 11 of 13 shots for seven points.

Led by 24 points from Holiday, the Sixers built a 14-point lead in the third quarter, and found an offensive touch they?ve missed for most of the season.

SUNS 97, BULLS 81

CHICAGO (AP) ? Luis Scola scored 22 points to help the Suns snap a five-game losing streak.

Michael Beasley added 20 points for Phoenix, which had lost 12 straight on the road and got its first win away from home since beating Cleveland on Nov. 27.

The Suns got the 2,000th win in franchise history, accomplishing the feat in their 3,599th game to become the fourth-fastest team to the reach the milestone.

Carlos Boozer had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Joakim Noah added 10 points and 13 boards for Chicago, which continued its inconsistent play at home with its fourth loss in the last six. The Bulls lost for just the second time in 13 games when both Boozer and Noah recorded double-doubles.

Chicago was whistled for four technical fouls, capped by coach Tom Thibodeau?s penalty with 3:57 left in the fourth.

JAZZ 90, PISTONS 87

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) ? Al Jefferson scored 10 of his 20 points in the third quarter, and Utah rallied for the win.

Detroit?s Brandon Knight missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds that would have tied the game after the Pistons trailed by 13 points with 3:26 left.

Jefferson helped the Jazz outscore Detroit 25-11 in the third, powering them to their first lead after trailing by as many as 15 points.

Utah also put together a 17-3 run after Austin Daye?s 3-pointer with 8:38 left gave the Pistons the lead for the last time.

Knight had 16 points and Greg Monroe scored 12 for the Pistons, who got a late lift from reserve Will Bynum, who scored 13 points.

Utah?s Paul Millsap and Randy Foye each scored 17.

PACERS 96, BOBCATS 88

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? George Hill scored 19 points, D.J. Augustin added a season-high 18 and Indiana earned its fourth straight win.

Lance Stephenson had 17 points and David West scored 14 to help the Central Division-leading Pacers, playing without leading scorer Paul George (illness), get their sixth win in seven games.

Ben Gordon scored 21 points for the Bobcats, and Kemba Walker had 16 on 5-for-9 shooting.

NEWS: Former For Today guitarist posts statement clarifying Twitter remarks

Earlier this week, Mike Reynolds, the now former guitarist of For Today posted a series of tweets condemning homosexuality within the Christian community that resulted in both backlash and support. Shortly after, For Today vocalist Mattie Montgomery announced that the guitarist was no longer in the band and encouraged fans to contact him directly for support if they had felt hurt by Reynolds' comments.

Last night, Reynolds posted the following on his Facebook page in attempt to clarify the now infamous tweets.

"Some clarification is needed over this statement:

?There IS a state church being formed, there is going to be an exclusive acceptance of preachers who advocate the LGBT(link to DallasVoice article)? Don?t be deceived, homosexuality is a sin. This sin with all other sins is what Jesus died for. He conquered so that we would be free. No such thing as a gay Christian, the same as there is no such thing as a Christian who loves his sin. Don?t be fooled by the formation of a state church as though the government is being converted, they only use the name of Jesus for their progressive liberal agenda. If you are a Christian then separate yourself from this civil religion that advocates sin. Stay true to God?

My sole concern is not what I said, but that via social network there is a huge chasm between what is being said and the tone of voice that I would use to say it face to face. There is an apparent disconnect between tone and the statement I made. I would enjoy this dialogue in person, but as a blanket statement via twitter it is quite insufficient and is heard as though I am picketing a funeral rather than expressing what I believe to be true. My intention was not to isolate the LGBT community(there has been enough of that), but to express that Christianity is not an ?everyone is welcome and not required to change? kind of an organism. The essence of Christianity is that the One True God has intervened in the broken cycle of human affairs and made a way for them to know Him and as a byproduct of knowing Him, be given true life. To say that there is no such thing as a gay Christian is simply to state that the initial requirement for a person to come to God is repentance. Repentance means to change your mind, when a person repents they change their mind. In the case of following Jesus, repentance is simply that a person who thinks their way is the best way would be required to think that Gods way is the best way. No one can follow Jesus without repenting of their sin, so no one can be a Christian without repenting from sin.

When I met my wife I surrendered any and all appetites for other women, she became my last romantic attraction. The basic rules of relationship like truth, love, sincerity, etc are intended to sustain the health of the relationship. There is a rule in our marriage that we are to be faithful to one another and not have any other partners. This rule is not a bad thing because I know how wonderful she is, but if I understood my wife to be an unreasonable hag then this rule would be a burden. When I observe how wonderful and faithful my wife is then I say simply, ?whatever you say goes.? We exist inside of this understanding of mutual love for one another.

So it was when I met Jesus Christ, at first I saw a figure in history who wanted to brainwash, manipulate, and twist people to feed an egotistical hunger of some sort.? With this understanding of Jesus of Nazareth I was unable to know Him, I couldn?t look at any of His commands without feeling a weight and burden of obeying someone that I didn?t love. However, God intervened in my life and I saw Him in His true light, I see the One who loves me enough to correct me when I am wrong and to affirm me when I am right. He is wonderful and I have repented of my past life and come to this conclusion, ?whatever He says goes.? He died for me, I will joyfully live for Him. Does this mean that absolutely no mistakes are allowed in the Christian life? Absolutely not, I am a man who is familiar with making mistakes. The reality however is that they are in fact, mistakes. This IS a learning process that I myself am in, I have not figured out all of what it means to follow Jesus, but I am willing to spend my life on learning. He is worthy of my life, my time, my everything and He faithfully leads me along this road called life. He is my everything and without Him I could not go through the things that I am required to go through.

I love every member of the LGBT community and in no way want to simply isolate any individual group of people, but to remain true to the word of God that, ?all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.? I desire for them to know God AS I desire for all people to know God through Jesus Christ.

To sum this up, I am not isolating homosexuality, but stating that ALL sin must be left behind to follow Jesus as Jesus Himself prescribed. Greed, selfishness, pride, envy, dishonesty, and any others you can think of must be surrendered for Gods way of honest relationship with Him. Homosexuality is not the ONLY sin and I would never say anything of the sort, but it is an issue in our day and at this time. My desire is for Christian men and women to understand what sin is and to offer the only one true solution to that sin, the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He is The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, this is only good news to someone who has been enabled by the grace of God to stop loving their sin, no matter what that sin is. If a man or woman loves their sin then they cannot obey the requirement of Jesus to repent and to follow Him. This is not something that human beings are intended to do in their own strength, on the contrary, God is to be glorified because He alone is the only One who can love us out of our mess.

Leave the burden behind, let go of those things that so easily distract you, God has demonstrated His love towards us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us, to set us free from sin and from death. Follow Him.

?Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.? Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God.

If you have read this far, thank you, I love you and would be willing to respond to emails at questions.mikefortoday@gmail.com"

Captors kill hostage in Somalia during French raid

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) ? The Islamist captors of a French military agent killed him during a French commando raid in Somalia, the French Defense Ministry said Saturday. An additional two French commando and 17 Islamists also died in the fighting, it said.

Gen. Martin Klotz, a spokesman for the ministry, declined to provide details of the overnight operation aimed at rescuing spy service agent Denis Allex ? the code-name for the agent who was kidnapped by the militant Islamist group al-Shabab in Mogadishu, the capital, in 2009.

A Somali intelligence official had earlier said the raid caused casualties but that he had no information on the hostage.

Residents of the town of Bulomarer described the chaotic sounds of explosions and gunfire from what they called an al-Shabab base. An al-Shabab official said that fighting began after helicopters dropped off French soldiers.

"Five helicopters attacked a house in the town. They dropped soldiers off the ground, so that they could reach their destination... but fighting has broken out," he said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

The al-Shabab official said that some soldiers were killed, but the group held only one dead French soldier. The identity of the soldier was not clear.

"We had Mujahideen fighters already deployed there who fought back the French soldiers. We killed some of their soldiers but only one dead soldier in a French military uniform is in our hands now," he said.

France acted Friday to help Mali against al-Qaida-linked militants who hold more than half of that country and are encroaching further on government-held territory. The raid in Somalia could have been aimed at preventing al-Shabab fighters from harming the French hostage in reprisal.

The attack was swift and loud, local residents said.

"We heard a series of explosions followed by gunfire just seconds after a helicopter flew over the town," Mohamed Ali, a resident of Bulomarer, told The Associated Press by phone. "We don't know exactly what happened but the place was an al-Shabab base and checkpoint."

Allex was kidnapped from a hotel in Mogadishu on July 14, 2009 with a colleague who later escaped. They were in Somalia to train government forces, which are fighting Islamist militiamen.

In October, French President Francois Hollande pledged to "use all means" to contact "anyone who can help free our hostages."

Nissan North America To Move Production Of Its Murano from Japan To Its Mississippi Manufacturing Complex

Nissan North America plan to move production of its Murano crossover model from Japan to the company?s Canton, Mississippi, facility, adding about 400 employees to its workforce of more than 5,000.

The Murano, Nissan?s flagship crossover, will be the eighth vehicle built in Canton. Production of the new Murano in Canton will begin in 2014.

?As we look back on ten years of manufacturing in Canton, it?s become clear throughout the Nissan network that ?Made in Mississippi? is a stamp of quality and great people,? said Bill Krueger, vice chairman of Nissan Americas. ?With the addition of this new model in Canton, Nissan is well on its way toward meeting our goal to manufacture 85 percent of the vehicles we sell in the U.S. right here in North America.?

?As the first automotive assembly plant to open in Mississippi, Nissan?s Canton plant propelled our state?s automotive industry to new heights,? said Brent Christensen, executive director of the Mississippi Development Authority. ?We greatly value the partnership we have with Nissan, the high-quality jobs the company has created for thousands of Mississippi residents and the contributions Nissan has made to our state?s economy, and we look forward to continuing to work with the company in the years ahead.?

?Nissan continues to exceed our expectations, and I greatly value the contributions the company has made in Mississippi,? Governor Phil Bryant said. ?Over the last ten years, Nissan has had a tremendous economic impact on central Mississippi, has catalyzed our state?s automotive industry and has continued to grow its Mississippi operations. I appreciate Nissan?s trust in our workforce, and I believe it led to the company?s decision to produce the new Murano in Canton, further demonstrating Mississippi?s strength as a manufacturing location.?

Over the past decade, Nissan has continued to invest in its Mississippi operations. The Canton plant has grown from building one vehicle model to seven, including the award-winning Altima, the Armada full-size SUV, the Xterra mid-size SUV, the Titan and Frontier pickup trucks and NV commercial and passenger vans.

How to Roast Vegetables in the Slow Cooker

Some things in life are too good to be true.

And the idea that one can make flavorful roast vegetables without turning on the oven, heating up the entire house, and watching fastidiously to ensure the veggies don?t burn?

Much too good to be true.

This one is true.

Say hello to roasted veggies in the slow cooker!

?But wait! There?s more! Call right now and we?ll double your order!?? Winking smile

slow cooker vegetables

Below: the veggies and seasonings I used. Feel free to change it up. Use more sweet potato, exchange carrots for the zucchini, cherry tomatoes for the garlic, add parsnips, add different herbs or spices?

?

Slow Cooker Roasted Veggies

(As noted above, feel free to change up the veggies.)

  • 2 bell peppers, cut in large slices (as shown in the photos)
  • 1 large sweet potato, peeled and cut into cubes
  • 3 small zucchini, cut in thick slices
  • 1/2 cup peeled garlic cloves
  • salt, herbs of choice, and oil (I probably used about 1/2 tsp salt, 1 tsp Italian seasoning, and 2 tbsp olive oil. I guess you could use oil spray if you don?t mind the taste of roasted vegetables without oil. But I like them much better with the olive oil.)

Grease your crock pot, then add all the veggies. (I used a 4-quart slow cooker.) Season with the salt, herbs, and oil, then stir to evenly coat. Cook 3 hours on high (or longer on low), stirring just once every hour or so. At this point, you can open the lid and drain the liquid for another use. Don?t discard it; the liquid is seriously delicious! I just drank it like soup. The veggies will be a softer texture than oven-roasted veggies, but they are actually even more flavorful and sweet. Crockpots?thanks to their slow and steady heating?are known to heighten the flavor of whatever you?re cooking.

CAPUTO: Jack Morris deserves better from Baseball Hall of Fame voters (VIDEO)

The voting is finally in for the most-anticipated ballot ever for the Baseball Hall of Fame.

As somebody who has submitted a ballot since 1997, these are my thoughts, item-by-item.

- I am surprised former Tigers? ace Jack Morris didn?t get in. It seems like he has become the victim of statistical nit and cherry picking. In the process, what Morris actually accomplished is too often ignored.

What is primarily keeping Morris out of the Hall of Fame is his career ERA. It was 3.90, which would be the highest of any Hall of Fame pitcher. What is not taken into account is the era Morris pitched in. The offensive numbers, likely because of Performance Enhancing Drug (PED) use, skewed higher in the late 1980s and 1990s, which encompassed the second half of his career.

For example, the composite batting average of American League hitters in 1968 was .230, and OPS (on base plus slugging percentage) .637. In 1987, the year in the middle of the World Series heroics Morris performed for the Tigers in 1984 and Twins in 1990, AL hitters batted .265 with a .759 OPS. The composite AL ERA and WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) in 1968 and 1987 were equally different. The ERA and WHIP in 1968 were 3.41 and 1.885 compared to 4.47 and 1.408 in 1987. Pitchers prior to 1969 worked on a mound that was five inches higher (15 inches compared to 10). Morris pitched in the American League when there was a designated hitter.

The pitchers of the 1950s and 1960s with the similar career stats across the board to Morris were locks for the Hall of Fame, but their ERAs were lower.

That?s before you get to the 254 career wins and Morris winning more games than any pitcher during the 1980s.

And the idea Morris wasn?t dominant in any given season is a laughable.

If it weren?t for Jack Morris, it is doubtful either the 1984 Tigers or the 1990 Twins (the latter a last-place to World Series title story the year they got Morris) would have won world championships. Continued...

The window of opportunity for Morris to be voted in was this year. With Greg Maddux, among others coming onto the ballot next year, I doubt he will be voted in. Next season will the 15th and last year Morris will be on the writer?s ballot. But the high percentage of votes he has been getting is a strong indication he will eventually be voted in by the Veterans Committee. It?s just a shame he will have to wait longer than necessary for that moment.

- My ballot this year had Morris, former Tigers shortstop Alan Trammell, Tim Raines, Fred McGriff and Lee Smith.

I didn?t vote for anybody I remotely suspected of PED use. I will not vote for Barry Bonds or Roger Clemens until a full and sincere mea culpa on their part. I would consider them if there is an admission about what they did, because a strong case can be made they were Hall of Fame caliber players before there were any PED questions.

Others such as Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, Mike Piazza I am suspicious, but will keep my mind open about voting for them in the future.

- It does not bother me nobody was voted in this year. Better to get it right eventually, than rush to action when it isn?t necessary. In other words, it is a 15-year process for each player. A lot can be revealed in that time. As for denials, remember Marion Jones and Lance Armstrong in other sports.

The players of the steroids era, collectively, did everything they could to make sure they protected those who were cheating their sport and the fan base. The media (myself included) turned a blind eye. History, for some reason, has diminished just how big an epidemic PED issue was in baseball for an extended period of time.

- Look, I have one vote, that?s all, and prepared myself for this day. I decided to do what I think, deep in my heart and soul, is the right thing. I know enough of the others also casting ballots to understand they are doing the same, whether they agree or not with parts or all of my ballot or stance.

If I get criticism for it, so be it. It comes with the territory.

I strongly feel I am doing the right thing.

SRS Opens Electronics Recycling Facility in Canada

New facility is located in Laval, Quebec.

Sims Recycling Solutions (SRS) says it has officially opened a new electronics recycling facility in Laval, Quebec, Canada. The new facility is 55,000 square feet. It is the fourth electronics recycling facility for SRS in Canada. The company also operates two recycling facilities in Ontario and an electronics recycling facility in British Columbia.

?Quebec, home to 24 percent of the Canadian population, is the latest province to implement WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) recycling regulations,? says Cindy Coutts, president of SRS, Canada. ?If Quebec?s volumes reflect those of other provinces driven by similar regulations, we can expect at least 25,000 metric tons of WEEE to be recycled in Quebec over the next year.?

Adds Coutts, ?Sims Recycling Solutions is committed to developing the most advanced recycling technology and in providing more green jobs in Canada and the world.?

The Quebec WEEE stewardship regulations, Direction des mati?res r?siduelles et des lieux contamin?s ? Service des mati?re r?siduelles/Regulation Respecting the Recovery and Reclamation of Products by Enterprises (here) took effect July 14, 2012.

SRS operates a total of 53 owned and operates electronics recycling sites globally, including 16 sites in the United States. The U.S. facilities are located in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

WPP's Group M Pulled Its Entire Ad Budget From ... - Business Insider

ITV, BSkyB and Channel 5 could see TV advertising revenue boosts of up to 30% in January, as they benefit from the continuing standoff between Channel 4 and WPP.

Group M, the media buying arm of Sir Martin Sorrell's WPP, which buys commercials for clients representing more than 30% of the total UK TV ad market, has shifted its bookings for January to rival broadcasters in a tough negotiating tactic aimed at getting a better airtime deal with Channel 4 for 2013.

As a result TV ad revenues at ITV1 are understood to be running at between 8% and 11% up year on year in January, according to multiple media buying sources.

BSkyB is thought to be up about 20% year on year and Channel 5, which was also hampered by an advertising boycott by clients of media agency MPG last January, is currently enjoying a 30% boost in TV ad revenue.

To put this in context the total TV advertising market for January, worth about ?240m, is thought to be up by at most 2% year on year.

However, Channel 4's rivals could see the millions of pounds in extra TV ad bookings they look set to gain because of the dispute disappear if renewed talks with WPP result in a swift deal.

It is understood that Channel 4 and WPP are back at the negotiating table, the first time any meaningful contact and progress has been made since 21 December.

Group M has annual ad deals with each of the main broadcasters. If a deal with Channel 4 is reached swiftly it can adjust client spend at each broadcaster across the year so that there is no real benefit for rivals from gaining extra bookings from the dispute this month.

Channel 4's rivals had been hoping that the dispute might run until late January, or longer. If this occurs the deal between Group M and Channel 4 is more likely to be struck on the basis of just the remaining months of 2013.

This would effectively make the ?20m Group M usually spends with Channel 4 in January extra money for rivals that could be banked.

The renewed talks do not necessarily mean that an agreement will be reached swiftly, but industry observers believe there is an imperative on both sides to get a deal done.

Group M's advertising clients, which include Ford and EE, are backing its position but will not want a Channel 4 blackout to persist.

WPP handles the ?285m media buying contract for the government's annual marketing budget, and yet new year campaigns tackling obesity and smoking are not being seen by viewers of the UK's second-largest free-to-air broadcaster.

It is not known how much of the government's ?285m budget is earmarked for TV ad spend.

Channel 4 also cannot afford the Group M dispute to continue for too long ? the media buying group spends about ?250m a year on advertising airtime with the broadcaster, close to a third of its total.

What Are the Medicare Lein Laws for Personal Injury Settlements ...

Medicare/Medicaid/Medi-Cal? What is the difference?

Medicare, created in 1965, ?is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD).

Medicaid is the United States health program for certain people and families with low incomes and resources that is managed by the states. ?In California it is known as Medi-Cal ?and it is a means-tested program that is jointly funded by the state and federal governments ?A means test is a determination of whether an individual or family is eligible for help from the government, based upon whether the individual or family possesses the means to do without that help.

An easy way to distinguish between the two is to remember that MediCARE is CARE to the Elderly and Disabled and , MedicAID?is AID to the poor.

Under Federal law Medicare has a right to recover for medical bills they have paid. ?Similar to the Medi-Cal Lien Laws, Medicare liens can be placed on the personal injury case of a person whose treatment is paid by Medicare. ?Medicare?s agents have a right to recover funds which would not have been paid without the negligent act which harmed the plaintiff-beneficiary.

What obligations do parties have to report to Medicare in a liability settlement?

Your Personal Injury Attorney will report to the Coordination of Benefits Contractor (COBC) with information such as the Medicare number, injury, date of injury/loss, and other pertinent information. ?Later, they must submit consent forms and proof of representation to the Medicare Secondary Payer Recovery Contractor (MSPRC). ?Then you and your attorney can address any unrelated payments and dispute those payments. Finally, a settlement should be immediately reported to Medicare?s MSPRC.

You may be wondering: ???Why do I have to pay them anything out of my settlement??

Medicare is considered a secondary payer of benefits. The laws are made to protect Medicare from either unpaid medical bills or reimbursement for bills already paid. The legal concept is to prevent a double recovery for medical bills paid by others. The law takes the position that since Medicare paid your bills, any monies that you recover from the responsible party should be repaid to them first before you receive any balance.

The Medicare laws are ?becoming more complex all the time because Medicare?s funds are rapidly decreasing. Medicare lien reimbursement rules are currently in flux and new laws are designed to recover more of the money that Medicare pays out to beneficiaries that should be paid by another insurer or entity.

In order to adequately protect yourself, you will need a knowledgeable personal injury attorney to determine if you are being offered fair value for your claim. ?If you have been injured and you are a Medicare recipient, contact the Law Office of Peter S. Cameron at 877-603-8473, ?As an experienced San Diego Personal Injury Lawyer, Mr. Cameron can negotiate for the best settlement in your favor.

This article is for educational and marketing purposes only. ?It does not create an attorney-client relationship.

White House declines comment on possible AIG suit

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House declined to comment on Tuesday on a possible lawsuit by insurer American International Group against the U.S. government that alleges the terms of the firm's 2008 bailout were unfair, but defended the rescue.

"I won't comment on a lawsuit that's pending," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters at a briefing.

"The U.S. government acted in a bipartisan fashion to prevent the disorderly failure of AIG after concluding that such a failure would have caused catastrophic damage to the economy and financial system," he added.

The company has repaid the government for its emergency funding and the government reaped a profit from the rescue, Carney noted. The bailout is a reminder of the need to continue putting financial reforms into place, he said.

Lenovo K900 is the first Intel Clover Trail phone, boasts 55inch 1080p screen and 13MP cam

Much like how Lenovo's K800 was unveiled as the first Intel Medfield phone last CES, this year the manufacturer pulled another first with the K900, powered by Intel's recently-announced Clover Trail+ platform (likely an Atom Z2580 clocked at 2GHz). For those who missed the Intel keynote, Clover Trail+ is the much improved yet still secretive successor to the relatively quiet Medfield, though it is odd that Lenovo only says "the forthcoming Intel Atom processor platform for smartphones" instead of just "Clover Trail+" in the press release.

Anyhow, said Android device comes with many mouth-watering features: 5.5-inch 1080p IPS display, Gorilla Glass 2, 13-megapixel F1.8 camera with dual flash, and a front-facing imager with an 88-degree super wide viewing angle. As with many Lenovo phones, there will also be three capacitive touch buttons below the screen. All of this goodness comes in a handsome 6.9mm-thick body that consists of stainless steel alloy plus polycarbonate, and together they weigh just 162g. Little else has been unveiled about the K900 so far, but it'll be available in China from April. Until we get our hands on the K900 later today, you can take a look at the official video after the break.
